A haldi invitation should tell guests three things fast: whose haldi it is, when and where it starts, and what to wear (usually yellow, and clothes they don't mind staining). The haldi is the turmeric ceremony held a day or two before the wedding, usually at home. A paste of turmeric with gram flour (besan), curd or milk, sandalwood or rose water is applied to the bride or groom by the married women of the family, then by everyone else. Turmeric is auspicious, it is believed to protect from the evil eye, and it gives the skin a glow for the wedding day.
The ceremony has many names. Marwari and Gujarati families call it pithi, and in many Rajasthani homes it begins the ban days (see our Rajasthani wedding invitation guide). In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar it is often ubtan or haldi-tel, and in South India you will hear mangala snanam for the ritual bath. Today many families also make it a separate event with its own invitation, decor and playlist, which is why a dedicated haldi invite has become so popular.

If the haldi is part of the main wedding invitation, it goes out with everything else, usually three to six weeks ahead. A separate haldi invite for close family and friends can go a week or two before, followed by a short reminder the evening before with the start time and the map pin.
